The New Year always seems to be about making resolutions. Why not read some fantastic books instead? This week we’re celebrating series that may be new to you! From middle grade to young adult, we’re highlighting series (some brand new, some just new to you!) that you may have missed. Now get started, you’ll be happy you did.

CREWEL

It is not unusual for us to find a book about a teen that is taught to hide her talents so she isn’t abducted to become a mechanism of an evil dystopic society.  But from the first chapter of Crewel, you realize Adelice is no ordinary cog in the wheel and the Guild and the world it controls is quite different from the ones we’ve come to know.  This world is like an alternate reality assembled from earthen materials that are layered on top of another.  “What?” you say. Read on.

Crewel is a one-of-a-kind fresh take on contemporary futuristic fiction with a nod to Mad Men like sensibilities.  A great juxtaposition and eagerly welcome in the midst of many worlds crashing and colliding among today’s YA pages.

Who doesn’t love a rebel who will not be controlled and is bent on bucking the system? From the beginning, the Guild tries to break her and make her a Spinster, but Adelice cannot be broken.  We learn her whole world is woven together by these Spinsters, women who can use a loom to thread the weave of Arras and she is to become one of them. This system of woven threads is maneuvered to create death, life, food and all reality. Everything. The head of the Spinsters is the Creweler.  The Spinsters are treated like royalty with amazing privileges but the real reality is that Adelice is a captive.  She doesn’t want to be married to this system and we find ourselves rooting for her escape.

Crewel is a truly extraordinary book weaving a mystery that has readers guessing until the end. You are never sure about Arras’s ultimate truth until people are falling through a time-space warp.   Once you have read the end of Crewel, it will leave you intrigued and wanting more. Grab a thread and hold on tight for book 2!
